An Atlantic Passage: Amsterdam to Puerto Rico

Atlantic Passage from Amsterdam to Puerto Rico for superyacht Halo

There is a particular thrill that accompanies departure from the shipyard—especially when the horizon stretches all the way across the Atlantic. As our 57-metre Feadship eased away from Amsterdam, months of meticulous preparation gave way to something far more exhilarating. This was no longer a build or a handover. This was a voyage.

From Shipyard to Open Sea

Casting off from the familiarity of the yard marked a defining moment. With the final lines released and the engines settling into their rhythm, the yacht glided toward open water. The narrow canals gradually gave way to an expansive horizon, signalling the true beginning of our crossing—and the adventure ahead.

A Festive Interlude in the UK

Our first call brought us to the UK, a timely refuge from unsettled weather and a perfectly placed pause for a crew Christmas. After the intensity of departure, it offered a welcome opportunity to slow the pace and celebrate together ashore. Good food, shared laughter, and a rare moment of stillness served as a reminder that long passages are defined as much by camaraderie as by nautical miles.

Turning South

With festivities behind us, we pointed the bow southward. Grey winter skies softened into brighter days as we chased warmer latitudes, the ocean stretching endlessly in every direction. The scale of the Atlantic was both humbling and invigorating—just the yacht, her crew, and open water.

Madeira: An Elegant Detour

As ever, the ocean dictated its own terms. A developing weather system prompted a strategic stop in Madeira, offering both shelter and unexpected charm. What began as a practical decision quickly became one of the journey’s highlights.

Time ashore was spent exploring local markets rich with seasonal colour, while an open-top tour revealed sweeping island views and moments of light-hearted laughter. It was a gentle reminder that even delays at sea can unfold into memorable experiences.

The Atlantic Crossing

With conditions improving, we departed once more—this time committing fully to the long ocean leg toward Puerto Rico. Life settled into a measured rhythm of watchkeeping, maintenance, and shared meals. As temperatures rose, the decks became a natural gathering place, with workouts framed by endless blue and warm trade winds.

Evenings brought time to unwind. A spirited murder-mystery game became a nightly ritual—enthusiastically debated, endlessly suspected, and never quite solved. Some mysteries, it seems, are destined to remain somewhere mid-Atlantic.

Landfall in Puerto Rico

After weeks at sea, the first glimpse of Puerto Rico on the horizon was unforgettable. The crossing delivered everything one could hope for: challenge, connection, adventure, and stories destined to be retold long after the passage ended.

From Amsterdam to the Caribbean, this journey was far more than a delivery. It was a true Atlantic passage—distinctive, demanding, and deeply rewarding.

Looking Ahead

With the crossing complete, the crew now turn their attention to the season ahead. Spirits are high, and there is a shared sense of anticipation as we prepare to welcome guests onboard. After months of dedication—culminating in this Atlantic passage and a meticulous refit—the yacht is ready to be enjoyed as she was always intended.

From exploring new destinations in the Pacific Ocean – French Polynesia and Tahiti to revisiting favourite anchorages in Costa Rica and Panama – the crew are eager to craft experiences that are both seamless and memorable. Each voyage promises discovery, connection, and moments that linger long after the journey ends. Onboard our newly refitted yacht, we look forward to creating unforgettable memories – together.
